Motif does not invent a source for a stripped referrer. The chart stays honest; the ranking ignores Direct.

Two different buckets

Direct / unknown: Motif stored a visitor, but the first event had no utm, click id, or classified referrer.
Unattributed: Stripe collected money Motif could not join to a visitor.

What to do

Privacy browsers drop third-party beacons. If first-party collection share is low, serve m.js from your own host. If that share is already high, the remaining Direct is typed URLs, bookmarks, apps that open the system browser, and stripped referrers. Motif credits in-app browsers (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others) to their app. Motif does not reassign the rest.
